Women's Volleyball Finish Off Weekend With Another Five-Set Win

RIPON, Wis. – The Ripon volleyball team picked up its second win in as many days to close out the weekend, knocking off Monmouth by a final of 3-2 a day after defeating Knox by the same score. Four Red Hawks recorded 10 or more kills in Saturday's game against the Scots to set a new season-best.

Monmouth took the first set 25-17, but the Red Hawks bounced back to take the second set 25-19 to even the score. Seven different Ripon players recorded a point in the second set, include an ace apiece from Tayja Cornell and Bella Kasuboski

The third set saw the Scots rattle off a 6-0 run to move in front 12-7, but Ripon answered with a 6-0 run of their own to retake the lead. The two teams went back and forth for the duration of the set, but Ripon took each of the last five points to win it 25-20 and put the Red Hawks on the right side of a 2-1 score.

A tight fourth set eventually ended in the Scots pulling even with a 25-21 victory, overcoming another 6-0 Ripon run along the way. Monmouth tallied the final four points, sending the match to a decisive fifth set.

The fifth set produced four ties and three lead changes, but an attack error put Ripon up 6-5 in the early going and the Red Hawks never looked back. Ellie Ove and Inesha Wiseman came away with back-to-back kills to make it a 14-10 edge, and a Monmouth attack error gave the home squad another conference win.

Ove led the offense with 16 kills, while Arynn Mathieu, Wiseman and Lydia Ellis followed with 12, 11 and 10 respectively. Karly Westphal recorded a career-high 48 assists, while Mathieu joined her as Red Hawks with a double-double.

Ripon will look to win its third straight on Wednesday, when they take on UW-Oshkosh in the final road match before the Midwest Conference Tournament. Tipoff from Oshkosh is slated for 7:00 p.m.
