RIPON, Wis. - The Ripon College Men's Basketball team used a dominating second half to secure a 72-54 victory over visiting Beloit College Wednesday night.
Ripon's balanced attack saw four players score in double-figures and 10 players enter the scoring column on the night.
Jaylen Mahone tied for the game-high with 13 points and added 9 rebounds for the Red Hawks.
David DeValk had 11 points, knocking-down all five of his shot attempts, and
Dominic Galati and
Owen Theune each had 10 points.
The game, overall, featured 11 lead changes and 7 ties, most of which came in the first half. In what was a slow building first half, Ripon led by seven points, 11-4, 7 minutes into the game. But, the Red Hawks went cold over the next 6 minutes as Beloit went on a 20-8 run to put Ripon behind 24-19. Ripon trailed by 6 with under 5 minutes to play in the first half, but the Red Hawks closed strong and took a slight, 34-32 lead into the locker rooms.
The first 5 minutes of the second half saw two ties and three lead changes, but
William Ryan broke a 40-40 tie and put Ripon in the lead for good. That three-pointer was part of a 17-3 run that spanned 7 minutes and gave Ripon a 12-point lead at 55-43. The Red Hawks would extend their lead to as much as 21 points with 5 minutes remaining before finishing off the 72-54 win.
Ripon, after bouncing back from a last-minute loss in their Midwest Conference opener on Saturday, sits at 1-1 in MWC play and 4-4 overall. The Red Hawks next travel to Knox College on Saturday, December 10
th for a 3:00 p.m. game.
