Red Hawks Lose Two Close Games At UW-Oshkosh Invitational

OSHKOSH, Wis. - On the first day of the two-day UW-Oshkosh Invitational, Ripon's softball team lost a pair of close games, falling to UW-Superior 10-6, before losing to Wisconsin Lutheran by a score of 4-3.

The day's first game saw UW-Superior (2-0) score first, as they plated one run in the top of the opening inning. Ripon (0-4) then answered with four runs on one swing of the bat, as Alli Martin crushed a pitch to deep center field, clearing the bases and crossing the plate herself for an inside-the-park grand slam, giving the Red Hawks their first lead of the season.

That 4-1 lead would disappear in the third when UW-Superior would tie things up with three runs of their own. They would add another run in the fourth to take the lead, but Ripon tied things up in the fifth on an Abby Gilbertson sac fly. Superior then scored two runs in the sixth, and three more in the seventh to put the game out of reach.

Ripon finished the game with seven hits, with two apiece coming from Gilbertson and Brennah Bronk. UW-Superior recorded 10 hits in the contest.

In the nightcap, Wisconsin Lutheran controlled the game early, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first. An Andrea Mihaljevich RBI single got the Red Hawks on the board in the second, while Claire Luebke cut that lead to one in the fifth when she drove in Micaela Encarnacion with an RBI triple to right field. WLC would get that run back on an RBI single in the fifth, but the Red Hawks made things interesting when Mihaljevich scored on a sac fly by Maddie Hablewitz. The Warriors then preserved their one-run lead by retiring Ripon in order in the final inning.

Mihaljevich finished the second game with three of the team's seven hits. Luebke was strong on the mound, allowing just two earned runs on seven hits in a complete game performance.

Ripon will be in action again on Sunday in the final day of the UW-Oshkosh Invitational. They will play UW-Superior again at 10 a.m., before facing St. Scholastica at 2 p.m. Both games can be seen live at https://www.facebook.com/oshkoshsoftball.
