RIPON, Wis. - Ripon went up against one of their toughest opponents of the season Saturday afternoon, as they faced Midwest Conference-leading Lake Forest, which entered the day undefeated in MWC play with a 10-0 record. The Foresters would remain undefeated after the day, defeating the Red Hawks 8-1 and 10-5 in Saturday's doubleheader.
Despite the game one loss, it was Ripon (5-23, 3-7 MWC) who got on the board first, as
Andrea Mihaljevich scored on a passed ball. That lead would be short-lived, as Lake Forest (20-12, 12-0 MWC) plated four runs in the fourth and four more in the sixth to put the game away.
Ripon finished the game with two hits, coming off the bats of Mihaljevich and
Mikaela Lawrence, who extended her current hitting streak to six games.
Lawrence would extend that streak to seven games with a 2-for-4 performance at the plate in game two, which included her third double and third triple of the season.Â
After falling behind 6-0 after two innings, Ripon's bats heated up, with an RBI double by
Anna Bauer getting them on the board in the bottom of the third. Lawrence followed that with an RBI double to left field, before
Abby Gilbertson drove in a run with a sac fly. Lawrence tripled home another run in the fifth, and would later score on a Gilbertson single to left, cutting Lake Forest's lead to one. The Foresters then waited until the seventh to tack on four insurance runs to secure the victory.
Ripon will try to rebound on Sunday when they'll travel to Grinnell College. That doubleheader will begin at 1 p.m. in Grinnell, Iowa, and can be seen live at https://portal.stretchinternet.com/ripon/#live.
