Gilbertson Powers Red Hawks Past Alverno In Doubleheader Sweep

MILWAUKEE, Wis. - Junior Abby Gilbertson had arguably her best day in a Ripon uniform Wednesday afternoon, going a combined 6-for-6 at the plate with three doubles and six RBI, as she led the Red Hawks to a pair of wins at Alverno College. The Red Hawks won the first game 8-2, before also winning the nightcap by a 5-4 margin.

Gilbertson tied school records for single game hits (4) and doubles (3) in Ripon's game one victory, while also driving in five runs, which is the second-most single game RBI in school history. She gave the Red Hawks a 2-0 lead in the first inning with a single to right, scoring Brennah Bronk. Gilbertson would drive in two more runs with a double to center in the third, and would later score on a fielding error. A Micaela Encarnacion double down the right field line gave Ripon a 6-0 advantage, before Alverno scored their only two runs of the game in the fourth. A pair of RBI doubles by Gilbertson in the fifth and seventh innings capped the scoring.

Ripon finished the game with nine hits. Although Mikaela Lawrence's hitting streak ended at nine games, she did score three runs for the Red Hawks, while also driving in one. Savana Trittlewitz went the distance in the circle, striking out seven, without allowing an earned run or issuing a walk.

In the day's second game, Gilbertson again gave Ripon a 2-0 lead in the first when she singled up the middle, allowing Lawrence to cross the plate. Alverno then scored the next four runs, but Anna Bauer closed the gap for the Red Hawks with her first career home run in the fifth inning, connecting on a solo shot to left field. Ripon would tie the score in the top of the seventh when Maddie Hablewitz singled up the middle to score Bronk from second base. One batter later, Andrea Mihaljevich gave Ripon the lead with an RBI single to right. The Red Hawks would seal the victory in style, turning a double play to end the contest.

In addition to Gilbertson's 2-for-2 performance at the plate, Bronk and Mihaljevich also recorded two hits apiece. Bronk also scored a game-high two runs. Claire Luebke earned the victory, pitching three scoreless innings of relief, scattering two hits and striking out a pair.

Ripon will be in action again on Friday when they'll travel to Appleton, Wis. to battle Lawrence University in a doubleheader at 3 p.m. Those games can be seen live at https://portal.stretchinternet.com/ripon/.
