ASHWAUBENON, Wis. - Lawrence scored four runs in the bottom of the ninth in the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader to earn a doubleheader sweep of Ripon. The Vikings won the first game of the twinbill 6-0, before also taking game two by a 7-6 score.
In the first game of the day, Lawrence (9-6, 4-1 MWC) set the tone early, scoring on an RBI single to center in the first inning by Jeffery Cambra. Edan Perez would knock in another run in that opening inning with a double down the left field line. A Jacob Charon solo homer gave Lawrence a 3-0 lead in the third, before Perez drove in another with a single in the fifth. Mitchell Sandleback and Cambra would each drive in a run later in the game to cap the scoring.
Ripon (9-8, 5-3 MWC) finished the game with five hits, with lead-off batter
Cormac Madigan recording two of those, including a double.
Blaine Wahlen (0-1) pitched well despite picking up the loss, as he allowed three earned runs on 10 hits in seven innings of work, while striking out two batters.
The day's second game saw Ripon hold the lead until the ninth inning. They started the game hot, as a
Nick Terrell groundout got the Red Hawks on the board in the opening inning, followed by
Cam Stampfl scoring a run on a Lawrence error. Charon doubled home a run in the bottom of that frame, but Ripon got that run back in the second on an RBI single off the bat of Terrell.
Stampfl extended Ripon's lead in the sixth with his first career home run in a Red Hawks uniform, depositing the ball over the right field fence for a three-run shot to give them a 6-1 advantage. Lawrence would chip away at that lead with a run in the seventh and another in the eighth. Then with one on and two outs, the Vikings caught fire, delivering three consecutive hits, including a pair of RBI doubles, the last of which tied the score at six. The winning run would cross the plate one batter later when Charon reached on an error, giving Lawrence the doubleheader sweep.
Ripon finished the second game with nine hits, three of which came off the bat of Stampfl, who was just a triple shy of hitting for the cycle.
Brock Warren added two base knocks for the Red Hawks. Mauricio Huesca Villegas received the no-decision, allowing four earned runs and striking out two without walking a batter in 8.2 innings of work.
The Red Hawks will be in action again on Thursday when they'll host Marian University in a single game at 2 p.m. That game will be played at Francis Field in Ripon, and can be seen live at https://portal.stretchinternet.com/ripon/.
