Ripon Loses Pair of Games To Grinnell

RIPON, Wis. - Ripon dropped both games of Sunday's doubleheader to Grinnell College, losing the first game 18-6 in eight innings, before dropping game two by a score of 10-2. Grinnell finished the doubleheader with 32 hits, 14 of which went for extra bases.

Grinnell (12-18, 10-10 MWC) scored early and often in the series opener, plating two runs in the top of the first, before Ripon crossed the plate on an RBI double by Jake Pankratz in the second. The Pioneers added five more runs in the third, and would break the game wide open with three more in the fourth and another in the fifth.

Ripon (14-17, 10-10 MWC) tried to close the gap in the middle innings, scoring two runs in the fifth on a double by Samuel Ott, before cutting the deficit to seven on an RBI single by Cormac Madigan in the sixth. Ott ad Zach Allbrent would add RBI in the seventh, but Grinnell pulled away with three runs in the eighth to end the game.

Madigan, Ott, and Nick Terrell each finished with two hits for the Red Hawks, with Terrell recording a pair of doubles. Brock Warret started and allowed three earned runs, while striking out three in three innings of work.

Game two started out similarly, as Grinnell scored four runs on three hits in the top of the first to set the tone for the contest. They would add a run in both the fourth and fifth inning before Ripon would cross the plate with their first run in the bottom of the sixth, when Ott would cross the plate on a fielder's choice. Ripon's only other run in the game came in the ninth on an RBI double off the bat of Cam Stampfl.

Stampfl led the Red Hawks with three hits, while Madigan and Terrell each recorded two. Freshman Mitch Lukasik (5-1) suffered the first loss of his collegiate career, despite striking out five batters.

Ripon now sits in a tie for fourth place with Grinnell in the Midwest Conference standings. These two teams will battle each other again in a single game Monday at 11 a.m. at Francis Field in Ripon. That game can be seen live at https://portal.stretchinternet.com/ripon/.
