Wiseman leads Ripon on day one of Wisconsin Blast Tournament

WHITEWATER, Wis. – The Ripon volleyball team was tripped up in both ends of a doubleheader on Friday, falling in three sets against #12 Wartburg before closing out the day against Loras.

Wartburg was clicking early on Friday and never looked back, taking the match with set scores of 25-18, 25-13 and 25-12. Inesha Wiseman was the highlight for the Red Hawks, posting 11 kills in a match that saw Ripon struggle offensively. Sam Thrasher picked up 10 digs for the match, while Riley Nielsen turned in the first of back-to-back 18-assist performances.

The nightcap saw the Red Hawks take their first lead with a big kill from Lydia Ellis to make 8-7, but the Duhawks answered with five straight points. Ellis again came up with a kill late in the first set, bringing Ripon with a point, but Loras once again answered with four points to take a 1-0 lead.

A pair of Loras attack errors and a service ace made it 3-0 Ripon lead early in the second, but the offense hit a bit of a lull that allowed the Duhawks to go follow with 19 of the next 29 points. The Red Hawks forced an early back-and-forth battle in the third set but came up short after Loras pulled away with a 17-11 lead.

Inesha Wiseman once again led the way offensively for the Red Hawks with 10 kills, while Tayja Cornell hit .333 en route to a double-double that featured 13 assists and 10 digs. Riley Nielsen recorded a team-high 18 assists for the second straight game, but perhaps the most impressive stat of the night was Ripon's eight service aces.

The Red Hawks close out the tournament on Saturday with another twin bill, taking on Blackburn College at 10 a.m. before rounding out the weekend with a match against Simpson at noon.
