The Ripon College women's basketball team scored the first seven points of the game and never looked back, cruising to a 69-38 home victory over Cornell College Friday evening.
Â
Alison Leslie and
Skyylar Brescia each posted a game-high 16 points while shooting a combined 12-of-23 from the floor. Leslie knocked-down three of Ripon's five three-pointers on the day while Brescia grabbed a team-high 8 rebounds.
Bella Opelt was Ripon's third, and final, double-digit scorer, pouring in 13 points, while
Bonnie Jensen and
Kiana Fall had 9 and 7 points, respectively, as the Red Hawks' starters combined for 61 of the team's 69 points.
Â
Jensen opened the game with an and-one layup on the first possession, kicking-off the game with the first three points of a 7-0 run to open the game. Ripon continued to lead by multiple possessions before closing the first quarter up 13-9. Cornell cut Ripon's advantage to just three points midway through the second quarter, but the Red Hawks kept them scoreless over the final 5:13 of the quarter, going on a 14-0 run to break open a 33-16 halftime advantage. The closing run proved to be all Ripon needed to secure the victory as the Red Hawks led by double-digits the rest of the way, expanding their lead to 33 with over a minute left in the fourth quarter before closing out the 69-38 victory.
Â
Ripon is right back at it tomorrow afternoon when the Red Hawks take on Monmouth College. The game, which is also Alumni Day, is set to tip at 1:00 p.m.
