CARBONDALE, Ill. – The Ripon College baseball team's big eighth inning wasn't enough as it dropped its final game at the NCC-Saluki Tournament today 11-10 to DePauw University. The Red Hawks drop to 0-3 on the season while the Tigers move to 1-0 to start the season.
The Red Hawks took an early 2-1 lead after one but the lead didn't last long as DePauw pushed four runs across in the bottom of the third to take a 5-2 lead. Ripon was able to get one of those runs back in the top of the fourth to make it, 5-3, but the Tigers tacked on another three runs in their half of the fourth to go up, 8-3.
Ripon chipped away at the lead in the top of the seventh as it pushed two runs across on two hits, a walk, two stolen bases, and two sacrifice flies to make it an 8-5 game.
The Red Hawks took its second lead of the game as it unloaded five runs in the top of the eighth. Infielder
Brady Price got things rolling as he singled to right and then was lifted for pinch runner
Mason Schoenke. Schoenke took second off a wild pitch before
Aiden Sparkman was plunked to put runners on first and second.
Cormac Madigan's single to center loaded the bases and
Cam Stampfl's single to short allowed Shoenke to score to make it 8-6 and keep the bases loaded. A passed ball by the new DePauw reliever let Sparkman score and move Madigan and Stampfl into scoring position.
After a pop-out to second for the first out,
Brock Warren drew a walk to load the bases for a third time.
Jack Anderson singled to left and was able to take second off an error by the left fielder, the single allowed Madigan and Stampfl to score. The error also permitted Warren to score and put Ripon in front 10-8 before the inning ended.
The Tigers tacked on a run in the bottom of the eighth to make it 10-9 before they rallied in the bottom of the ninth with two runs to claim the victory, 11-10.
Ripon used five pitchers in the outing with reliever
Brett Tetzlaff taking the loss (0-1). The leftie threw 1.2 innings allowing two runs on one hit while finishing with a team-high three strikeouts.
Stampfl and Warren combined going 6-for-9 with six runs scored, four RBIs, two walks, and a stolen base. Teammate Anderson finished the game going a perfect 2-for-2 with three RBIs, a run scored, a double, a stolen base, and two walks.
The Red Hawks are back in action on March 11-17 when they head to the USA Stadium Complex in Millington, Tennessee for its Spring Trip. Ripon will face North Park University first on March 11 at 1:30 p.m.
