GRINNELL, Iowa - The Ripon College baseball team fell 11-8 in game one of the series to Grinnell College this afternoon in Midwest Conference action. Ripon falls 19-14 overall and 12-7 in the conference while the Pioneers improve to 14-17 and 10-8 in the MWC.
Up 1-0 going into the top of the second, Ripon pushed three runs across the plate on four hits. It all started when
Nick Tenny singled and then scored from first when
Evan Olson tripled to make it, 2-0. With one out, Olson later scored off of
Alex Pankratz's RBI single. Â Pankratz then stole second during
Kaleb Burns's at-bat. Â Following a ground for the second out of the inning,
Cormac Madigan singled to drive in Pankratz and put the Red Hawks up 4-0 before a line out to center ended the frame.
The Pioneers plated three runs in the bottom half of the second to make it a run-one game, but the Red Hawks were able to get one of the runs back in the top of the third to push their lead to, 5-3.
Grinnell continued to chip away as it tacked on another run in the bottom of the fourth on two hits and an error to make it, 5-4.
Ripon put up another three-run inning together in the top of the fifth as it pushed its lead to, 8-5. The Red Hawks used a pair of singles, two walks, a triple, and a stolen base in the frame.
Grinnell didn't go away as it kept chipping away at the lead when it scored two runs in the sixth, three in the seventh, and two in the eighth to go on to take its first lead 11-8 and hold on for the win.
Four Red Hawks finished the game with multiple hits as Tenny paced all Ripon hitters going 3-for-4. He finished with a walk and a pair of runs scored. Pankratz finished with a game-high four RBIs while going 2-for-4 with a run scored and a triple.
Cam Stampfl and
Brock Warren each finished with a home run apiece.
Warren took the loss on the rubber for Ripon to fall to 1-3 on the season. He scattered 12 hits over seven innings of work allowing nine runs (eight earned) while fanning six in the process.
Ripon is back in action tomorrow when it takes on Grinnell in a doubleheader to close out the series. Game one is set for 11 am.
