Game 1: Ripon 22, Grinnell 7 – 7 innings
Ripon took an early 6-1 lead after the first, but the Pioneers were able to tack on four runs in the bottom of the second to make it a 6-5 game.
The Red Hawks broke the game open in the top of the third when they plated seven runs on four hits and a Pioneer error. Olson started things off when he walked and then stole second following a strikeout. An error by the Pioneer's shortstop allowed
Alex Pankratz to reach first and give Ripon two men on. Olson later scored when
Michael Sheehy doubled to make it, 7-5. Pankratz advanced to third on the play.
Cormac Madigan kept things rolling when he walked to load the bases for the Red Hawks. Following a strikeout by
Cam Stampfl for the second out of the inning a wild pitch allowed each runner to advance 90 feet with Pankratz scoring to make it, 8-5.
Warren cleared the bases for Ripon when he doubled to push the score to 10-5 with two outs. Warren then scored to make it 11-5 off a throwing error when Hickman singled. Hickman was able to take second on the play. Tenny decided to get in on the action when he homered to left to put the Red Hawks in front 13-5 before a flyout ended the inning.
Ripon added four runs in the fifth and five in the sixth to make it, 22-5. Grinnell was able to tack on a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh to make it 22-7 but it wasn't enough as the Red Hawks held on for its 20
th win of the season.
Starting pitcher
Mitchell Lukasik picked up the win to improve to 5-1 on the season. The lefty threw a complete game allowing seven runs (all earned) on nine hits while striking out seven. The seven strikeouts were a season-high for him.
Game 2: Ripon 5, Grinnell 9
Trailing 4-0 going into the top of the second, Hickman opened the inning off by parking a home run over the left-field wall to make it 4-1 and get Ripon on the board. Tenny kept the inning going as he singled to center but that would be all as the next three hitters went down in order.
Ripon opened the top of the third the same way as it did in the second, but this time it was
Kaleb Burns who hit a solo home run over the left-field wall just like Hickman did to make it a 4-2 game now. With one out, the Red Hawks threatened when Stampfl doubled to the right-center field gap but he would be standard as the next two hitters flew out to center to end the inning.
The Red Hawks tacked on another run in the top of the fourth to make it a 4-3 game but Grinnell broke the game open in the bottom half of the fourth as it put up a four spot to make it, 8-3.
The Pioneers added a ninth run in the bottom of the sixth to make it, 9-3, but Ripon pushed a pair of runs a crossed the plate in the top of the seventh to cut the lead to four.
For the next two innings, the Grinnell bullpen held the Red Hawks scoreless to go on to win 9-5 and take the season series 2-1.
Ripon starter
Blaine Wahlen took the loss to fall to 2-3 on the season. He allowed four runs (three earned) on four hits in an inning of work.
