RIPON, Wisconsin – The Ripon men's tennis program completed its 2023-24 regular season on Saturday at the Willmore Center, falling to Cornell 8-1 and #34 Grinnell 9-0.
Cornell (16-7, 3-2 MWC) claimed an early 3-0 lead after doubles, winning 8-0 on courts one and three while finishing off doubles with an 8-2 win on the second line over Ripon (3-17, 1-5 MWC).
In the first flight of singles, the Rams took all four first sets and clinched the match with straight-set victories on courts three and two in succession. Facing one of the top-12 singles players in the region,
Caleb Sippel rallied from a 5-2, second-set deficit against Alexander Strumlauf to tie the set at five, but Strumlauf won the next two games to take court one.
Cornell continued singles with wins on courts four and six before
Corey Mooney took down Edwin Holyoake 6-4, 7-5 on court five to close out the match.
In the afternoon finale, Grinnell (21-3, 6-0 MWC) showed why it's a top-40 team in the country, sweeping all three doubles courts and dropping just two games total in the process.
Courts four and one went the way of the Pioneers to clinch the match, while Grinnell ended the afternoon with four more straight-set wins on courts two, three, five and six.
