Ripon Defeats IC for 20th Consecutive Time

RIPON, Wisconsin – The Ripon women's basketball program bounced back from its first league loss with an 88-49 win over Illinois College on Saturday afternoon inside Weiske Gymnasium.
 
Stopping a three-game winning streak by Illinois College (5-10, 2-4 MWC), Ripon (10-4, 4-1 MWC) scored 14 consecutive points in the first quarter and never looked back, leading by at least 15 for the final 27 minutes.
 
STANDOUT HAWKS
  • Freshman guard Halle Van Horn collected a double-double in the first half alone, finishing with 13 points and 10 rebounds in the first 20 minutes. She ended the afternoon with 21 points and 12 rebounds (both career-highs), adding two steals.
  • Sophomore guard Laney Havlovitz chipped in 12 points, four rebounds, four assists and three steals.
  • Junior guard Natalie Rauwolf tallied nine points, three rebounds and three steals.
  • Senior forward Ella Ten Pas stuffed the stat sheet with nine points, 20 rebounds, three assists and three steals. This marks the second time this season that the senior has recorded at least 20 boards in a game.
  • Senior guard Anna Fahrney notched eight points and three rebounds.
  • Freshman guard Karsyn Nelson added seven points, two rebounds, four steals and two assists.
PLAY-BY-PLAY
With the score tied at three, Ripon broke the game open early with a 14-0 run as IC was held without a basket for over five minutes. The Lady Blues scored six in a row to cut into their 14-point deficit, and brought the game within seven in the final minute. However, Ripon ended the period with three consecutive free throws to lead 23-13 after one.
 
Ripon scored the first four points of the second quarter, prompting an Illinois College timeout. The Red Hawks went on a 9-0 spurt in the midway point of the frame, opening up a 36-15 advantage. The teams exchanged baskets in the final three minutes of the half, but a pair of Fahrney free throws near the buzzer put the Red Hawks in front 42-24 at intermission.
 
Ripon opened the second half on a 7-2 run, taking its biggest lead of the quarter at 23 (49-26). However, IC pushed back by scoring 12 of the next 16 points, trimming its deficit to 15 in the process. The Red Hawks led by 15 for the entire period, ending the quarter on an 8-2 spurt and pulling in front 63-42 with 10 minutes yet to play.
 
The Red Hawks showed no signs of slowing down in the fourth, scoring nine consecutive points to go up 72-44. Ripon went on a 13-2 run in the middle stages of the quarter as Illinois College was held to one made field goal in the final eight minutes of play. Sophie Schlieve scored the last four points of the game for Ripon as the Red Hawks cruised to the win.
 
KEY STATS
  • Ripon shot 42.1% from the field (32-of-76) and limited IC to 18-of-56 shooting (32.1%).
  • The Red Hawks were 21-of-33 from the free throw line, while the Lady Blues only attempted 11 free throws.
  • Ripon had a 50-22 advantage in paint points and scored 28 second-chance points.
  • The Red Hawks had a dominating 60-28 rebounding advantage.
  • Anna McKee led Illinois College with 10 points.
