RIPON, Wisconsin – Completing the previously suspended game from April 13, the Ripon softball program fell 5-4 to Cornell at Tracy Field on Wednesday night.
Wednesday's game picked up with the top of the sixth inning and the teams tied at four apiece. Cornell (11-18, 3-7 MWC) threatened off the bat – loading the bases with one out – but
Alayna Sadowska recorded consecutive strikeouts to preserve the tie game. The Rams took the lead on a fielder's choice in the top of the seventh, but the door was open for Ripon (9-19, 6-4 MWC) in the bottom half of the inning. Sadowska reached base on an error to lead off the inning, but she was caught stealing to halt the Red Hawks' momentum.
The final two batters of the game were retired as Cornell picked up the MWC win.
Ripon had just four hits in the game, as
Ashlyn Schultz (1x3, run),
Sydney Swanson (1x3, run),
Hadley Berendsen (1x2, 3 RBI, run) and
Nadiyah Huizar (1x3) all had base hits.
Ashlynn Donahue got the no-decision in the circle. She pitched the first five innings, allowing 10 hits and four earned runs. Sadowska took the loss and pitched the final two innings, giving up four hits and one earned run.
NEXT UP: Ripon hosts Lawrence on Saturday, April 26 for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. Saturday will also serve as Senior Day for the Red Hawks' lone senior,
Maddie Hablewitz.
