Game Recap: Volleyball |

Red Hawks Suffer Losses to Warriors and Vikings

MILWAUKEE, Wis. -- Ripon women's volleyball recorded a 0-2 record in this season's WLC Triangular, falling 1-3 to the hosts before dropping a 0-3 match to Augustana College. Sophomore Makenna Harren (Rosemount, Minn., Rosemount HS) would lead the Red Hawks in kills, recording 20 across both games.

Game one saw the Red Hawks open closely with the Warriors, as the two teams traded points until late in the set. Tied at 24-all after a set point block from the Warriors, Ripon would force two attack errors out of the hosts, grabbing the first set 26-24. Despite the strong first set showing, Ripon would go down early in the second, as the Warriors jumped out to a 15-5 lead. The Red Hawks struggled to find a run to overcome the deficit, and found the match leveled at 1-all after a 15-25 second. The third set would unfortunately go the way of the second, with Ripon going down 17-9 as play continued. Looking to overcome the separation, junior Haylee Kast (Reedsburg, Wis., Reedsburg Area HS) would record back to back kills as Ripon looked to build on a four point run, but WLC would cut off the attempt, ending the set 16-25 in favor of the hosts. The fourth set would be more of the same, and WLC would take the win 25-11 in the fourth.

Game two saw Ripon pitted against a strong serving opponent, with the Vikings recording 13 service aces across three sets of action. Despite an initial eight point run giving the Vikings a 13-3 lead, the Red Hawks would show grit through the set, forcing the scoreline back to 17-18 as the teams entered the final stretch of the first. Although a late kill by senior Lainie Heizler (Park Falls, Wis., Chequamegon HS) looked to give the Red Hawks hope, the Vikings would hold strong, taking the opening set 25-19.

The second set would again see Augustana carve out a strong run, winning 11 of 12 points late to take a 23-8 advantage. Ripon would end the set fighting, going into the third down 0-2 after a 11-25 second. The third set would see the Red Hawks open strong, taking a 6-2 lead over the Vikings. Up 12-9 midway through the set, Ripon would face difficulty on service returns, giving up two aces as the Vikings leveled the score. While the Red Hawks would keep pace with the opponent in the final set, Augustana would seal the win, finishing the third with a 25-21 victory.

The Red Hawks return to action next weekend with another triangular, hosted by Lakeland. The Muskies enter the contest 5-9, coming off an 0-3 loss to UW-River Falls at the time of writing, while third participant Elmhurst enters the game 4-10.
