Red Hawks Fall in Pair of Games on Spring Break Trip

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. -- Ripon baseball dropped both games of a Sunday doubleheader during its spring trip in Florida, falling to Rutgers-Camden 6-1 before an 11-1 loss to Macalester at Chain of Lakes Park in Winter Haven.

Rutgers-Camden struck first in the opening inning of game one, using an RBI groundout to take an early 1-0 lead. Ripon answered in the sixth inning when senior Kyler Hickman (Tracy, Calif., Merrill F. West HS) scored on a double play ball off the bat of junior Crete Slattery (Lake Geneva, Wis., Badger HS), tying the game at 1-1.

Starting pitcher freshman Griffin Jens (New London, Wis., Hortonville HS) kept the Red Hawks within striking distance, tossing seven innings while allowing five hits and three runs. Rutgers-Camden regained the lead in the seventh after scoring on a Ripon error and added another run in the eighth to make it 3-1.

The Scarlet Raptors broke the game open in the ninth with a three-run double to push the lead to 6-1.

Ripon collected six hits in the contest, with freshman Trey Page (Land O Lakes, Fla., Land O Lakes HS) leading the way with two. Graduate student Gabriel Kennedy (DeForest, Wis., Northwestern St. Paul) recorded two hits as well, while senior Jack Anderson (Oconomowoc, Wis., Oconomowoc HS) and Hickman each added one.

In game two, Macalester jumped ahead early with a run in the first inning and added another in the third before Ripon got on the board in the fourth. Page scored the Red Hawks' lone run of the game after freshman Raidan Shibayama (Honolulu, Hawaii, Punahou School) stole second and advanced home on a throwing error by the catcher.

Macalester responded with three runs in the fourth inning and erupted for six more in the fifth to pull away.

Ripon finished with five hits in the game. Anderson, Slattery, junior Owen Gerhardt (Greenville, Wis., Fox Valley Lutheran HS), Shibayama, and sophomore Bailey Schepp (Oakfield, Wis., Oakfield HS) each recorded a hit.

Senior Adam Mellema (Park Ridge, Ill., Maine South HS) made the start on the mound for the Red Hawks, striking out five across 3.2 innings. Freshman Zach Le Mieux (Suamico, Wis., Sacramento City College) added 1.1 scoreless innings in relief.

Ripon will continue its Florida trip Monday morning with a 9am matchup against the University of Southern Maine.
