Red Hawks Go 2-1 in Trio of Extra-Inning Battles

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CLERMONT, Fla. -- It was a marathon day for Ripon College softball, as all three contests, including a varsity reserve game, went to extra innings during Thursday's action in Florida.

Game 1: Ripon 4, Fredonia 3 (9 innings)

Ripon opened the day with a gritty walk-off victory in nine innings, using timely hitting and strong pitching to outlast Fredonia.

After falling behind 1-0 early, Ripon answered in the fourth when sophomore Ashlyn Schultz (Denmark, Wis., Denmark HS) delivered an RBI double to tie the game. The Red Hawks continued to battle as the game stretched into extras, with both teams trading runs in the eighth and ninth.

In the bottom of the ninth, Ripon capitalized on the international tiebreaker. Freshman Nora Lowney (Racine, Wis., Case HS) layed down a beautiful bunt to put the tying run in motion, and moments later freshman Callissa Keller (La Valle, Wis., Wonewoc-Center HS) delivered the decisive hit, driving in the game-winning run to secure the 4-3 victory.

Lowney led Ripon with two hits, while Keller added a pair of hits and the walk-off RBI. Schultz also drove in a run and recorded a double.

In the circle, freshman Peyton VandeLoo (Kaukauna, Wis., Freedom HS) was dominant early, striking out 11 over six innings, while sophomore Brooklyn Cooper (Reno, Nev., Galena HS) closed out the final three innings to earn the win.

Game 2: Ripon 8, McDaniel 9 (8 innings)

The second game turned into another extra-inning battle, but this time Ripon came up just short in a high-scoring 9-8 loss.

Ripon struck first in the third inning behind sophomore Maddie Heisler (Appleton, Wis., Appleton East HS), who tripled and later scored. After falling behind 4-1, the Red Hawks responded with a three-run fifth inning, highlighted by a two-run double from freshman Cyriana Reinwald (Horicon, Wis., Horicon HS) to tie the game.

The offense stayed hot in the sixth, as Ripon plated three more runs. Schultz came through again with a two-run double to give Ripon a 7-4 advantage.

McDaniel rallied late, tying the game in the seventh to force extras. Ripon briefly regained the lead in the eighth on a sacrifice bunt from junior Nadiyah Huizar (Buena Park, Calif., Buena Park HS), but McDaniel answered in the bottom half with a walk-off two-run double.

Heisler led the offense with two hits, including a triple, and scored twice. Schultz and Reinwald each drove in two runs, while Keller added an RBI.

Varsity Reserve Game

Ripon also competed in a varsity reserve game that extended into extra innings, coming away with a 9-8 victory to cap another tightly contested matchup. No official box score was recorded, but the Red Hawks gained valuable innings and experience across the roster.

Ripon wraps up its spring break trip in Florida tomorrow, closing out a stretch that has tested the team with multiple tightly contested games.
