RIPON, Wis. -- Ripon took care of business at home on Saturday, sweeping a conference doubleheader against Monmouth (Ill.) behind strong pitching and timely hitting to improve to 17-7 on the season.
The Red Hawks set the tone early in game one, pushing across all three of their runs in the first inning. Senior Kayla Cruz (Anaheim, Calif., Anaheim HS) delivered the big swing with a two-RBI single up the middle, and sophomore Ashlyn Schultz (Denmark, Wis., Denmark HS) followed with an RBI knock to make it 3-0 before Monmouth could settle in.
That was more than enough support for freshman Peyton Vandeloo (Kaukauna, Wis., Freedom HS), who turned in another dominant outing in the circle. Vandeloo struck out 11 over 5.2 innings, allowing just four hits and one unearned run to move to 9-3 on the year. Sophomore Brooklyn Cooper (Reno, Nev., Galena HS) closed out the final four outs to secure the 3-1 win.
Ripon's offense racked up 10 hits in the opener, with freshman Carli Moldenhauer (Oconomowoc, Wis., Oconomowoc HS), freshman Desirae Kallstrom (DeForest, Wis., DeForest HS), and Schultz each collecting two.
Game two followed a similar script, as Ripon again jumped ahead early. The Red Hawks plated three runs in the first inning, highlighted by RBI singles from freshman Callissa Keller (La Valle, Wis., Wonewoc-Center HS) and Cruz, along with aggressive baserunning that led to another run.
Freshman Cyriana Reinwald (Horicon, Wis., Horicon HS) added to the lead with an RBI double in the second, and Moldenhauer continued her strong day at the plate with a three-hit performance, including an RBI single in the sixth that proved to be the difference.
Monmouth made things interesting late, scoring twice in the seventh, but sophomore Alayna Sadowska (Oshkosh, Wis., Oshkosh West HS) worked through 6.2 innings to earn the win, allowing just two earned runs. freshman Kasey Moldrem (Cadott, Wis., Cadott HS) came on to record the final out and pick up the save as Ripon held on for a 5-4 victory.
Across the doubleheader, Ripon totaled 21 hits and consistently capitalized on early scoring chances while getting quality innings from its pitching staff.
The Red Hawks will look to keep the momentum going when they travel to face Marian on Wednesday, April 15, with first pitch set for 3pm.
