WAUKESHA, Wis. - With their last meet taking place a month ago, the Ripon men's swim team knocked off the rust Saturday afternoon, narrowly losing in a dual meet at Carroll University, who finished last season with a third-place finish in the Midwest Conference. The Red Hawks led the meet with two events to go, but would eventually lose by a score of 92-82.
Ripon placed a swimmer in the top three in all 11 events during the meet. David Peterkes had one of the best showings of the day, winning the 1000 freestyle by more than two minutes with a time of 12:27.26. Petrkes also finished second in the 500 freestyle with a time of 6:05.79, which was three seconds ahead of teammate Kevin Polston, who added a second place finish in the 100 backstroke (1:01.70). Another highlight of the day for the Red Hawks was the performance of Jonathan Newbery, who won both the 50 freestyle (23.23) and 100 freestyle (53.12). Tyler Rutkowski also placed in the top three in two seperate events, taking second in the 100 breaststroke (1:09.69) and third in the 200 IM (2:21.30). The other two individual events on the day saw Ripon finish in second place, as Ben Jones was just one second shy of winning the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:11.15 and Brian Schumacher swam a 100 butterfly time of 1:09.41.
In relay competition, the Red Hawks won the 200 medley and finished second in the 200 freestyle relay. In the 200 medley, Polston, Rutkowski, Newbery and Nicholas Masterson teamed up to record a time of 1:47.68, which was 11 seconds better than the Pioneers. In the 200 freestyle, Peterkes, Jones, Schumacher and Jay Homan combined to swim a time of 1:46.95, which was less than three seconds shy of the winning time in that event.
The Red Hawks will have next weekend off from competition, before taking part in the annual Wisconsin Private College Championships on Saturday, January 26. That meet will begin at 1 p.m. in Kenosha, Wis.
