Game 1 Box Score
Game 2 Box Score

WHITEWATER, Wis. -
Ripon nearly notched a signature win Sunday afternoon against 11th-ranked UW-Whitewater. The Red Hawks took a one-run lead into the ninth, before allowing six runs to lose to the Warhawks, 12-7. Whitewater then finished off the sweep with a 13-3 win in the nightcap.

The first game saw Whitewater jump on the board early, with two runs in the top of the first. The Red Hawks (3-9) matched them with two in the bottom of that frame on an RBI single by Mitchell Busch and a sacrifice fly from Tom Sawyer. Whitewater (10-2) grabbed the lead again in the second on an RBI double, before Sawyer tied the game once more in the third on an RBI single to left center.

Ripon's first lead came in the fourth when Michael Polcyn singled to right center, scoring Nick Schmitt from second base. The lead changed hands again in the sixth when the Warhawks scored on a two-run triple and an RBI double. That lead lasted until the bottom of the eighth when Ripon plated three runs of their own. Schmitt recorded an RBI double to pull within a run, before Polcyn blasted a two-run homer over the wall in right center to give Ripon a 7-6 lead heading into the ninth. The see-saw battle continued in the final inning, which saw the first five Whitewater batters reach base. The big blow came on a two-run home run, which was part of the six-run ninth.

The Red Hawks finished the game with 13 hits, with three coming off the bat of Polcyn. Schmitt, Busch, Nate Siudak and Jake Reinke each added two hits apiece. Tom Fish took a no-decision, allowing five earned runs in seven innings of work.

Ripon again gave Whitewater all they could handle in the early innings of game two. The Red Hawks got on the board first in the bottom of the second on a groundout that scored Busch, who led the inning off with a single. That lead didn't last long, as Whitewater scored twice in the third and three more times in both the fourth and fifth innings. Ripon got two runs back in the bottom of the fifth, scoring on a pair of Whitewater errors, but that wouldn't be enough, as Whitewater capped the scoring with a three-spot in the ninth.

Ripon's eight hits came from seven different people, with Busch being the only player with multiple hits (2). Patrick Van Daalwyk (0-2) suffered the loss, allowing six runs in four innings, while striking out five and walking just one batter.

The Red Hawks' next scheduled game is Wednesday at 4 p.m. against Marian University. That will be a single game at Francis Field in Ripon, Wis.
