RIPON, Wis. - Wednesday's games against St. Norbert turned out to be exact opposites for the Ripon College baseball team. The Red Hawks would never lead in the first game, which was won by the Green Knights, 10-6. Ripon ended the day on a positive note however, taking game two by a score of 6-2 in an absolute gem from
Patrick Van Daalwyk on the mound.
St. Norbert (11-10, 2-4 MWC North) jumped on the scoreboard early and often in the first game, plating two runs in the top of the first inning, as the first five batters reached base. Travis Mason and Jose Godinez each collected RBI singles in the inning. The Green Knights scored three more runs in the third, recording five hits in the inning with RBIs from Nick Pierre, Alex Larsen and Adam Enwiya, who doubled in another run in the fifth. Another RBI by Mason in the sixth gave SNC a seven-run advantage.
Ripon (8-10, 1-1 MWC North) got on the board in the bottom of the sixth when
Dakotah Kirchenwitz unloaded for his first home run of the season, a solo shot over the left center wall. St. Norbert added three runs in the eighth, before Ripon put together a rally in the bottom of the ninth that would eventually fall short.
Mitchell Busch and
Stan Mrozinski each drove in a run in that final inning, with the other run scoring on an error.
The Red Hawks' only multi-hit effort came from
Tom Sawyer, who was 3-for-5 at the dish with two runs scored.
Tom Fish (0-3) suffered the loss, striking out four batters in 7.1 innings.
St. Norbert recorded 19 hits in the game, as all but one of the nine players in the lineup recorded a multi-hit game. Kevin Nutley (4-1) picked up the win, striking out six batters in six innings of work. Nate Schadrie picked up the three-inning save for his first of the season.
In the second game, it was a reversal of fortunes, as Ripon led from start to finish, getting on the board with a three-run second that was keyed a two-run single by
Robbie Schuettpelz. The Red Hawks added two more runs the following inning on
Michael Polcyn's sixth home run of the season. St. Norbert plated their first and only runs in the top of the eighth, before Ripon tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of that inning on an RBI single off the bat of Nate Siudak.
Polcyn led the Red Hawks with two of the team's nine hits, while Busch scored twice. Van Daalwyk (1-2) had great stuff on the mound, twirling a six-hit complete game, allowing zero earned runs, while striking out seven batters.
St. Norbert's only multi-hit performance came from Mason, who was 3-for-4 with an RBI. Like Van Daalwyk, Matt Freeman went the distance for the Green Knights, allowing four earned runs and striking out five in his eight innings.
The Red Hawks will be in action again on Saturday when they'll travel to Carroll University. That doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. in Waukesha, Wis.
