Ripon Bats Come Alive In Doubleheader Sweep of Carroll

Game 1 Box Score
Game 2 Box Score

WAUKESHA, Wis. -
Ripon dominated both games of their doubleheader at Carroll University Saturday afternoon, defeating the Pioneers by a combined score of 33-10. The Red Hawks won the first game 24-5 in seven innings in a game that saw Ripon score the fourth-most runs in a single game in school history, while pounding out the fifth-most hits in a single game in school history (23). A 9-5 victory in the nightcap clinched the doubleheader sweep and gave Ripon seven wins in their last eight games.

The first game didn't get totally out of hand until the top of the seventh, when Ripon (10-10, 3-1 MWC North) doubled its run total with 12 runs on 11 hits. The Red Hawks scored the game's first runs with two in the first, but Carroll (8-12, 3-4 MWC) took their first and only lead of the day with a three-run home run in the second. Ripon answered with a five-run third, which included a three-run homer by Nick Schmitt, who would add another three-run dinger in the seventh.

Schmitt finished the game 5-for-6 with three doubles to go along with his two home runs, while also scoring three times and driving in eight runs, which is the second-most RBI in a single game in program history. Michael Polcyn also went yard in the game with his seventh home run of the season, in addition to one double, en route to finishing 6-for-6 with five runs scored and four RBI. Polcyn is now batting .500 (38-76) on the season with a slugging percentage of 1.000. Mitchell Busch also had a strong game, going 3-for-5 with four runs scored and five RBI. Nate Siudak and Nate Siudak added three hits apiece, while Tom Sawyer scored four times.

Overshadowed by the offensive explosion, Marshall Zahn (2-1) earned the victory, allowing two earned runs in six innings, while striking out 10 batters and walking just one. Those 10 punchouts ties a career-high and is tied for 10th in program history.

In the second game, it was Carroll that jumped on the scoreboard first, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first. That lead lasted all of one inning, as Ripon scored eight runs in the second thanks to four hits and three Carroll errors. The big blow came on a three-run home run by Polcyn, giving him eight on the season. The Pioneers pulled within three runs as they scored once in the third and again in the seventh, but the Red Hawks tacked on an insurance run in the ninth to seal the victory.

Polcyn finished 3-for-5 with four RBI in the second game, while Sawyer also recorded three hits, to go along with two runs scored and an RBI. Matt Hecht (3-1) earned the victory, pitching 4.2 innings without allowing an earned run, while striking out two.

Ripon will try to keep things going on Monday when they'll host Carroll for another doubleheader. That twinbill will begin at 11 a.m. at Francis Field in Ripon.
