RIPON, Wis. - Just two days after sweeping a doubleheader at Carroll, Ripon duplicated that feat Monday afternoon, taking two more games from the Pioneers to win for the ninth time in their last 10 games and extend their win streak to five. The Red Hawks eeked out the first game of the twinbill 4-3, before winning the nightcap 5-1.
Carroll (8-14, 3-6 MWC North) gave Ripon (12-10, 5-1 MWC North) all they could handle in the first game, as the Pioneers took the early lead with a pair of runs in the top of the first with one run scoring on a throwing error. The Pioneers tacked on another on a sac fly in the sixth before Ripon's bats got going in the bottom of that inning.
Dakotah Kirchenwitz started the Red Hawks rally with a lead-off double and would score one batter later when
Tom Sawyer recorded a double of his own. Another run would score on an RBI single by
Michael Polcyn, who later came around to score on a Carroll fielding error.
Ripon's first and only lead of the game came in the seventh when
Robbie Schuettpelz scored on another error by the Pioneers.
The Red Hawks' seven hits came from seven different players.
Patrick Van Daalwyk (2-2) pitched his second consecutive complete game, allowing two earned runs on seven hits, while recording a career-high 11 strikeouts, which is tied for eighth in school history, and walking none.
The second game allowed Ripon to breathe a little easier, as they never trailed, taking the first and only lead of the game on a Carroll error. They added another run in the third on another miscue by the Pioneers, while scoring twice more in the fifth on an RBI double from
Nick Schmitt and a run-scoring single by
Nate Siudak. Kirchenwitz put the icing on the cake with a solo home with one out in the eighth, his second of the year.
Siudak led Ripon's 11-hit attack with three base knocks, while Schmitt, Kirchenwitz and
Mitchell Busch each recorded two.
Tom Fish (1-3) picked up his first win of the season, allowing one run on nine hits, while striking out two in 8.2 innings of work.
Michael Anderson recorded his first save of the season, as he entered the game with two out in the ninth and runners on the corners, only to get a groundout back to the mound for the game's final out.
Ripon will hope to keep their momentum this weekend when they'll play a four-game set against Lawrence University beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday in Appleton at 1 p.m.
