Ripon Splits Season Series With St. Norbert

Game 1 Box Score
Game 2 Box Score

GREEN BAY, Wis. -
One week after splitting a home doubleheader against St. Norbert, the two teams duplicated that feat. Ripon won the first game of Wednesday's twinbill 5-1 before dropping the nightcap 10-0 in eight innings.

The Red Hawks (13-11, 6-2 MWC North) never trailed during game one, breaking a scoreless tie in the top of the sixth on an RBI double by Nick Schmitt that scored Mitchell Busch from first base. St. Norbert (15-12, 6-6 MWC North) tied things up in the bottom of that inning on an RBI single, before Ripon put the game away in the final innings.

Ripon broke the tie in the eighth on a solo homer by Michael Polcyn, his ninth of the season, putting him one shy of the 10th-highest single season total in school history. The Red Hawks added two more runs in the inning, scoring on another double by Schmitt and on a single by Sam Waters. They also tacked on an insurance run in the ninth on a sac fly by Tom Sawyer

Schmitt and Nate Siudak each finished with a team-high two of Ripon's 11 hits. Marshall Zahn (3-1) was brilliant, on the mound, allowing just four hits in seven innings, without giving up an earned run. He also struck out two batters on the day. Ethan Bemowski picked up his first save of the season, pitching two scoreless innings, while striking out a pair.

The second game wasn't as kind to the Red Hawks. Despite recording more hits (10) than St. Norbert (9), the Red Hawks were shutout for just the second time this season and first time in 21 games. The Green Knights were aided by four Ripon errors.

St. Norbert scored their first runs with two in the second, while adding three more in the third and one in the fourth. They completed their scoring with four runs in the bottom of the eighth, ending the game with two outs and two runners on base.

Sawyer, Polcyn and Jake Reinke each finished with two hits for the Red Hawks, which failed to record an extra base hit for just the third time this season. Matt Hecht (3-2) suffered the loss, allowing four earned runs on three hits in 2.1 innings of work.

Brett Nohr (4-2) led St. Norbert on the mound with a complete game shutout, striking out four, without walking a batter.

Ripon will now turn their focus to this weekend's four-game series against Lawrence University. Saturday's doubleheader will begin at 1 p.m. in Appleton, while the teams will also play two in Ripon on Sunday.
