Official USBWA Release
After last week's performance for the ages, Ripon senior guard
Ty Sabin continues to see the honors roll in. Already the recipient of the Midwest Conference Performer of the Week and a spot on the D3hoops.com National Team of the Week, Sabin on Tuesday was named NCAA Division-III Men's Basketball National Player of the Week by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association (USBWA). This marks the second time in Sabin's career that he has been selected as the D-III National Player of the Week.
Sabin's week was highlighted by a school record 53-point performance in a 105-100 win against Loras. In that game, he scored 45 of Ripon's 54 second half points, making 12-of-13 shots after halftime, including 5-for-5 from 3-point range and making 16-of-20 free throws in that spectacular half of play. His 53 points breaks the previous school record of 51, which Sabin set last season. That followed a 33-point effort in Ripon's season-opening win against Wisconsin Lutheran.
In addition to his 43 points per game, Sabin also averaged team-highs of 5.5 rebounds, four assists, and 1.5 steals per game, while shooting 63 percent (26-41) from the field, 53 percent (8-15) from 3-point range, and 84 percent (26-31) from the free throw line.
An Exercise Science major from New Berlin, Wis., Sabin currently leads the NCAA in scoring average across all divisions (43.0 ppg). He is also the NCAA's active leader in career scoring average across all divisions (25.0 ppg) and has scored in double figures in all 74 games he has played for the Red Hawks. The two-time All-American and MWC Player of the Year needs 25 points Friday at Monmouth to break Scott Gillespie's school scoring record of 1,871 career points.
The U.S. Basketball Writers Association was formed in 1956 at the urging of then-NCAA Executive Director Walter Byers. With some 900 members worldwide, it is one of the most influential organizations in college basketball. It has selected an All-America team since the 1956-57 season.
