Ty Sabin has been named Division-III National Player of the Week by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) for his performance in last week's Midwest Conference Tournament. That makes Sabin the first player in the history of the award to earn the honor three times in one season and is the fourth time Sabin has received this award during his distinguished career.
An Exercise Science major from New Berlin, Wis., Sabin led Ripon to its first NCAA Tournament berth in 15 years over the weekend as the Red Hawks won the MWC Tournament for the first time since the 2001-02 season. During the two games in the MWC Tournament, Sabin averaged 40.5 points per game, while shooting 60 percent (29-48) from the field, including 57 percent (12-21) from 3-point range, and making all 11 of his free throws.
In Ripon's 80-79 semifinal win against Cornell, Sabin scored 50 points, while making eight 3-pointers, including the game-winner with one second remaining. During that game, which marked Sabin's third career 50-point game and second this season, Sabin broke Ripon's single season scoring record of 697 points, which had been set 39 years ago.
The next day, Sabin scored 31 points in an 81-72 victory over Lake Forest in the MWC Championship Game, while breaking Ripon's record for career 3-pointers of 277, which had been set 25 years ago. The NCAA's active leader in career scoring average across all divisions (25.9 ppg), Sabin also surpassed the 2,500-point plateau during that Championship game. In addition to his scoring prowess, Sabin averaged four rebounds, two assists, and one steal during the MWC Tournament.
Sabin currently leads all of Division-III in scoring (30.2 ppg), while ranking third in D-III in 3-point shooting (.491) and 44th in free throw percentage (.867). He also is second in the MWC in field goal percentage (.557) and tied for 10th in steals (1.4 spg), while leading Ripon in both rebounding (5.6 rpg) and assists (3.0 apg).
Each Tuesday, the USBWA selects a men's and women's Division-III National Player of the Week. This is the third season that the USBWA has recognized national players of the week from Division-III. The USBWA was formed in 1956 at the urging of then-NCAA Executive Director Walter Byers. With some 900 members worldwide, it is one of the most influential organizations in college basketball.
