Ty Sabin Signs Professional Basketball Contract With Denmark's Horsholm 79ers

Ripon's all-time leading scorer Ty Sabin has dreamt of playing professional basketball for most of his life. That dream has now become a reality as the First Team All-American and three-time Midwest Conference Player of the Year signed a contract over the weekend to play for the Horsholm 79ers in Horsholm, Denmark.

"Having Ty Sabin with us is one of the best news we've received this summer," Horsholm 79ers Head Coach Rafa Monclova Suarez said. "He's a player with huge potential and we want to help him continue his growth and development as a top player. I'm convinced that with his talent and ability to work, his adaptation to European basketball will be fast and successful. We have many expectations and hopes placed on Ty and the potential impact he will create for the Horsholm 79ers."

A native of New Berlin, Wis., Sabin was named NABC Central District and D3hoops.com Central Region Player of the Year in 2017, leading all of Division-III in scoring with 30.7 points per game, which was nearly three ppg more than the next highest scoring average. A finalist for the Bevo Francis Award, Sabin also ranked seventh in D-III in 3-point shooting (.478), while ranking 21st in 3-pointers per game (3.31). Sabin's 86 total 3-pointers in the 2017 season ranked 18th in D-III and is just five shy of Ripon's single season record. Sabin also ranked 48th in D-III in free throw percentage (.863) and 77th in field goal percentage (.551). In addition to that, Sabin leads Ripon in rebounding (5.4 rpg), assists (2.9 apg), and steals (1.3 spg). He was selected to play in the Division-III All-Star Game at the conclusion of the 2017 season, scoring a team-high 24 points in leading the East squad to victory.

Sabin started all 98 games during his career with the Red Hawks, scoring in double figures each time, and finishing his career leading the NCAA, across all divisions, in career scoring average among active players (26.1 ppg). One of only two players in MWC history to score more than 2,500 points, Sabin holds the school record for career 3-pointers with 283, and is the only player in program history to score 600 points in more than one season, accomplishing that feat three years in a row. Sabin has scored a school record 2,559 career points, which is 668 more than the second-highest total. His 798 points in the 2016-17 season broke Ripon's single season record, which had been set 39 years ago, and is just 16 shy of the conference record. Ripon's career leader in scoring average, Sabin also ranks second in school history for career free throw percentage (.859) and fifth in 3-point percentage (.465).

"I'm excited about the opportunity that Ty has earned with the Horsholm 79ers," Ripon Head Men's Basketball Coach Ryan Kane said. "Navigating the waters of international basketball isn't easy, but we received great advice from his agency, Duran International, and after an invite from the Milwaukee Bucks we all agreed the best place to start his career was in a First Division league in Europe. Horsholm is not only getting a great basketball player, but also a tireless worker who strives to get better everyday. I truly believe that Ty is just beginning to reach his potential as a player even after such a decorated career at Ripon and I'm certain that he'll continue to represent Ripon, the Midwest Conference and NCAA Division III basketball quite well."

Sabin joins a Horsholm 79ers team that finished 17-16 last year and in third place in the Basketligaen, which is the highest-ranked professional league in Denmark. Founded in 1979, the Horsholm 79ers men's team has won two Danish League Championships, with the last coming in 1993. Horsholm is a city of nearly 47,000 people, approximately 16 miles north of Copenhagen, while Denmark is located directly north of Germany and south of Norway and Sweden.
