Box Score 2 RIPON, Wis. - After losing the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader 14-4 to conference-leading Beloit College, Ripon's baseball team redeemed themselves with a 10-9 victory in game two, handing Beloit their first loss of the 2021 season in comeback fashion.
Trailing by one entering the bottom of the ninth of the second game, the first two Red Hawks reached base, setting the stage for Jonathan Hall to drive in
Anthony Zak on a groundout to tie the score at nine. Two batters later,
Nick Tenny sent the Ripon faithful home happy as he singled to left, scoring
Zach Albrent from second to secure the victory. That emptied the Red Hawks' dugout as all of Tenny's teammates greeted him on the field in celebration.
That final hit was the third lead change in the game. Beloit (9-1, 7-1 MWC North) started the contest out with two runs in the top of the first, but that was quickly answered by three Ripon runs in the bottom of that frame, which saw
Dane O'Donnell record an RBI single and two more runs score on a Beloit throwing error.
Beloit would then score four runs in the fifth to take a 6-3 lead. O'Donnell then singled in another run, but Beloit added to their lead in the sixth with two more runs. With Ripon trailing 9-5 in the bottom of the eighth, the Red Hawks' bats really came to life.
Keegan Johnston connected on a three-run homer in the bottom of the eighth, his fourth long-ball of the season, cutting the lead to 9-8 and setting the stage for Tenny's heroics in the ninth.
Both teams finished the game with 13 hits. The first six batters in Ripon's lineup combined for all of the team's hits, led by
Jake Pankratz's 3-for-4 performance. Pankratz (2-1) also earned the win on the mound, allowing just one hit in a scoreless ninth inning. Tenny, Johnston, O'Donnell,
Evan Barbian, and
Nick Terrell each finished the game with two hits, while Johnston scored a team-high three runs.
That game followed the first game of the twinbill, which saw Beloit win 14-4 in seven innings. Beloit out-hit the Red Hawks 15-6 in a game that Ripon (6-15, 2-6 MWC North) never led.
After scoring three runs in both the first and third innings, Beloit added another run in the fourth to take a 7-0 lead before Ripon pushed a run across in the bottom of the fourth on a sacrifice fly by
Dane O'Donnell. Beloit then scored once more in the fifth and five more times in the sixth to break the game wide open.
Ripon was led by Terrell's 2-for-3 performance at the dish, while also scoring two of the team's four runs. Johnston, O'Donnell, and
Owen Greene each recorded one RBI in the game for the Red Hawks.
Ripon is scheduled to be in action again on Saturday as they'll travel to University of Chicago for a doubleheader beginning at Noon. Those games can be seen live at https://athletics.uchicago.edu/sports/bsb/live-video.
