Box Score FOND DU LAC, Wis. - The Ripon women's soccer team knows how to put their fans on the edge of their seat. For the second consecutive game, the Red Hawks needed overtime to earn a victory, defeating Marian University 2-1 in double OT to remain undefeated and improve their season record to 3-0-0.
Marian jumped out to an early lead on Briana Pawlowski's second goal of the season in the 21st minute. Neither team scored again until the second half when Ripon freshman
Riley Pennington notched her first career goal on a free kick from about 25 yards away in the 59th minute. After neither team scored for the remainder of regulation or the first overtime, it was another freshman,
Maeve Kim, who played the role of hero, netting her first career goal with less than two minutes to play in the second OT.
Stephanie Neumann and
Paige Pierce were each credited with an assist on the game-winning goal.
"This was a gutsy performance by all the players," Ripon Head Coach
Greg Ruark said. "At halftime, we made an adjustment in the formation without having had an opportunity to practice it, and the ladies were fantastic. It was a bit unfair of me to ask them to change, but after 20 minutes of the second half, our play improved immensely and I thought we controlled the pace of the game."
Ripon Goal Keeper
Miye Aoki-Kramer played all 108 minutes, making four saves. Her counterpart, Danielle Deltgen also played the entire game, recording five saves for Marian (2-1-0).
The Red Hawks will try to improve to 4-0-0 for the second consecutive season on Saturday when they'll host Illinois Tech at 2 p.m. That game will be played at Prairie Field in Ripon and can be seen live atÂ
