What began as an “undistinguished career” at Greendale High School in suburban Milwaukee blossomed into stellar college and professional playing years of the running back known as “The Ripon Ripper.” The Redmen’s record during Dave Smith’s three varsity years was 18-5-1. He compiled a 1,000-yard record his sophomore  year alone and netted 2,000 yards overall. Picked up in a special draft by the Houston Oilers of the all-new American Football League in 1960, Dave gained All-League honors his first year and remained a valuable team starter for three years before injuries ended his pro career. Though short-lived, those AFL years have been described as an “overnight success” with “electrifying results.”
