Roland Horky played both basketball and football at Ripon. In basketball, he received two letters, was a starting forward on the 1939 Midwest Conference Championship team and was named to the All-Conference team that year as well. A leader on the field as well as the court, Horky was co-captain of the 1939 football team. He won First Team honors on the All-Midwest Conference football squad and was called “one of the greatest backs in recent years.” The Crimson continues, “He could kick, pass, block and plunge and his bone-crushing tackles made him one of the most feared linebackers in the conference.” An “R” Club member, Horky continued his athletic career after graduation, playing a year of professional football for the Milwaukee Chiefs in the old American Football League (AFL).
